The Miyako islands region has a subtropical and maritime climate with a mild temperature in winter. However, from spring to fall (especially in September), it is repeatedly hit by typhoons. These can cause serious damages to crops as well as disruptions to the transportation system. Still, this aspect of the climate is in its own way a natural blessing as the typhoon rains are an indispensable source of water in dry weather.
